Chief Roseman
James John Roseman
Batted: Right
Threw: Right
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 167 lbs.
Born: 1856 in New York, NY
Died: July 4, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY
Chief was not an Indian, but earned his nickname--so the story goes--from his habit of letting out war whoops. He was also a good enough ballplayer to nail down one of the outfield positions on the all-time Metropolitans team. His last season in the big leagues produced his career highs in batting average, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage. He was also hit by 29 pitches; perhaps that is what dissuaded him from giving it one more try. His 1887 Gold Coin card is pictured here, courtesy of the Library of Congress.
