As a batsman, Dave was so superior to anyone else who played for the original Metropolitans, it's almost like he was playing a different game. While the rest of the franchise was batting under .250 cumulatively, Dave was smashing the ball to the tune of a .348 average, with remarkable power for that generation. He is, of course, the first baseman on the all-time Metropolitans team. At one time or another, he led the Mets in nearly every offensive category, and he led the entire American Association in several of those categories as well. His career was cut short when he suffered a paralyzing stroke; otherwise, he may very well have made it to the hallowed halls of Cooperstown. In fact, Dave's batting average of .354 in 1884 ranks as the highest batting average for any full season in Mets history, past or present, just nosing out John Olerud's 1998 season, .35371 to .35368.
