Ed played outfield for the Metropolitans during their final season and showed a fine knack for being able to reach base. Even though On-Base Percentage didn't exist in the wildest dreams of baseball's early statisticians (at least with that name--some prehistoric sabermetricians considered counting walks as hits, which is nearly the same thing), Ed's was unusually high for that generation.
