Lipman Pike, a star from baseball's earliest days (according to some records, he was actually the first professional baseball player), was an ancient 42 years old when he appeared in his one and only game for the Mets. Before that, though, he had played eight really successful years in the big leagues, compiling a sterling career batting average of .321. He was a prolific run-scorer, actually tallying more runs for his career than the amount of games he played in, and--if the records can be trusted--he also went the entire 1874 season without striking out a single time! Lip also served three different short tenures as a spectacularly unsuccessful manager, with a career winning percentage that was lower than his batting average!
