Dave took over as the hitting coach starting in 2001 and lasted for just a year and a half. I never heard anyone ascribe any blame to Dave, but the fact is that while he was there, the Mets just didn't hit! Engle was an outfielder and catcher for three big-league teams, and was once a .300 hitter in the majors for a full season as the starting catcher for the Twins, even being selected for the 1984 AL All-Star team. He's shown here on his 1986 Donruss card.
