I remember watching Doc pitch as a rookie, absolutely freezing batters at the plate as the huge strikeout totals mounted, and thinking he had a chance to be the greatest pitcher ever. During his second season, nothing happened to change anybody's thinking on that account, as he went 24-4 and won the Cy Young award as a 20-year-old! But then the long, slow, downward spiral began into eventual substance abuse, which destroyed his chances at a Hall-of-Fame career. Still, his final numbers for wins and strikeouts are second only to Tom Seaver's among New York pitchers. This gorgeous card is from the Aces insert set from 1993 Score Select, and there are many more cards pictured below.
