Was considered for a time to be the catcher of the future for the Mets, but he wasn't quite able to seize the opportunity, and then Gary Carter became a Met. John became a minor-league manager after his playing career, and finally arrived in the majors for an extended stay when he became the skipper for the Toronto Blue Jays.
