Born: Oct 27, 1933 in Oakland, CA

His given name was "Elijah" but they called him "Pumpsie." This is the right choice if you are a slender backup second-baseman, but not if you are an Old Testament prophet. "And the word of the Lord came to Pumpsie the Tishbite…?" I just can't see it. The card shown here is from the 1960 Topps set.

"Almost the first thing people do is ask me how I got my nickname. I figure eight million people have asked me so far, almost half of them sportswriters. When I get out of baseball I'm gonna write a book entitled, 'How I Got the Name of Pumpsie' and sell a million copies at a dollar apiece." -- Pumpsie Green 3 |
