Cleon is best known as the left fielder on the 1969 World Champions, and it is also well-known that he held (for nearly 30 years) the record for the highest Mets batting average ever, with his .340 in '69. His average of .319 two years later was also the second-highest Mets average ever for many seasons. Lesser-known facts about Cleon's significance at Shea include these: He led the Mets in steals four seasons in a row, and also in on-base percentage four years in a row. He led the club in batting and in slugging percentage four different times, and in runs, hits, doubles, and triples three times each. He was tops in RBIs and total bases twice each, and even led the club in home runs one season. Cleon is shown here on his 1970 Kellogg's card. Below the stats box are cards from Cleon's entire career.
