Tug McGraw
Frank Edwin McGraw
Batted: Right
Threw: Left
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 185 lbs.
Born: August 30, 1944 in Martinez, CA
Signed: 1964 by the Mets
Departed: traded to the Philadelphia Phillies with Don Hahn and Dave Schneck for Del Unser, John Stearns, and Mac Scarce, December 1974
Died: January 5, 2004 in Nashville, TN
Tug was the toast of New York; his best pitch was called a screwball, and so was he sometimes! His battle cry of "Ya Gotta Believe!" in 1973 led the Mets to an improbable World Series appearance, and is still invoked over 30 years later on a regular basis by the Met faithful. His courageous battle with brain cancer before he died in 2004 was well known, and he was mourned by thousands in both New York and Philadelphia—actually, throughout all of baseball, where he was venerated for his continuous, contagious good cheer. He's shown here on his 1974 Topps card, and there's an even baker's dozen more cards pictured below, as well as two other pieces of Tug memorabilia.
