John was an utterly professional ballplayer. Quiet in demeanor, impeccable on defense, and dangerous at the bat, he was as respected for his talents as anyone in the game. His batting average in 1998 is the highest ever for a New York Met. John was originally a Mets draft pick in 1986, but chose not to sign; instead he waited three years for the Blue Jays and never spent a day in the minor leagues.
