Garry Templeton
Garry Lewis Templeton
Batted: Both
Threw: Right
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 190 lbs.
Born: March 24, 1956 in Lockney, TX
Drafted: 1st round 1974 by the St. Louis Cardinals
Acquired: traded from the San Diego Padres for Tim Teufel, May 1991
Departed: as a free agent, November 1991
After Garry's first five seasons in the big leagues, he had a .307 career batting average, three seasons with 13 or more triples, four seasons with more than 25 stolen bases, and a couple of years with 200 hits. In the eleven seasons he played after that, he had a cumulative average of .253 (never reaching .290 again), no season with double figures in triples, only one more with 25 steals, and only one more with at least 150 hits. Still, he was a respected veteran leader for the Padres, and they never seemed to regret having traded Ozzie Smith for him even-up. He's shown here on a card from the 1989 Padres Magazine, and his Topps rookie card is shown below.
