It looks like David is standing among the clouds on this 2001 Upper Deck card, and that is where the New York fans expected him to lead them. He made his major-league debut in July of 2004, and did nothing to diminish those expectations. His first full season in the big leagues saw him named the Mets Hitter of the Year as he produced one of the finest all-around seasons ever for a Mets batsman. Two years later he became a 30-30 man and broke the Mets' all-time record for total bases in a season as he picked up his second Hitter of the Year award. The calculation used for Hitter of the Year declared that David's 2007 bested any Met season to date—better than Strawberry or Olerud or Piazza or anybody else ever to wear the blue pinstripes.
